Carole Rakodi is a social scientist who has worked in Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia for over thirty years, as a professional and researcher. Following seven years in Zambia, she worked in the Universities of Cardiff and Birmingham in the UK (and for the UK Department of International Development in Nairobi in 1996/7). Her interests have focused mainly on urbanisation and urban development (including urban planning, land delivery, housing, urban politics and governance, household poverty and livelihoods) and religions and development. Between 2005 and 2011, she was director of a large research programme on religions and development led by the International Development Department, University of Birmingham, and continues to write on this theme. She has published widely, including many journal articles, authoring and editing books on Harare, Large Cities in Africa, Urban Livelihoods, Urban Governance and Poverty, and Religions and Development, and editing special issues of journals on informal urban land delivery in Anglophone Africa, urban poverty, and conflicts over urban land.
